How to Choose SnowBaord

ť Snowboard: In the old days (about ten years ago), Our understanding of technique came from knowledge that was borrowed from other sports, namely skiing.

Know before you buy what style of snowboarder you are and where you're at skill-wise. Select a board, set a budget and don't forget to factor in the cost of bindings and boots. Equipment was changing each season and technique was changing with it.

All-Mountain riders enjoy the entire mountain with a day's adventure taking them from the smooth groom to the puffy backside and everywhere inbetween. Freeriders look for high speeds on either groomed front runs or powdery backcountry. Freestylers prefer to play in snowparks and the halfpipe.

A snowboarder can edge and pressure a snowboard using the common edge and pressure control movements, but they can also control the pressure and edge along the length of the board.

Lets start with a basic heel side side-slip. If edge and pressure are held equal with both feet the board will slip straight down the fall line. If we change the amount of edge with one of our feet things change.

So if you are a recreational riders you will want a soft-flexing board. If you are a performance riders you 'll want a versatile board. If you are and experts snowboarder an extra-stiff board with lots of pop for high-speed stability.

Basically, snowboarding technique is closer to skateboarding and surfing than skiing. If you can bear to miss a good day's alpine skiing, choose a day when there are a few centimetres of new snow to cushion your early falls.

A board that stands between your chin and nose is considered a good length. But your weight is important because you need to be able to flex the board to turn or do tricks. Your dominant foot should be anchored on the front of your snowboard. To determine which foot is dominant, stand with your feet next to each other, side by side. Have a friend give you a gentle shove in the back; the foot you instinctively move forward to break your fall is the dominant one.

Some teachers recommend you take your poles for the first day, since this avoids some of the tedium of falling around on your butt or knees, but your balance is affected, and it's preferable to dispense with them from day one.

Another factor in selecting a board is your boot size. Snowboarders with a boot size of men's 10 or larger may have "boot drag" on a standard-width board. Boot drag is when the toe and heel of your boot extend over the edges of the board. To alleviate this, you can either increase your stance angle so the boot is brought closer to the board, or buy a wider board for riders with big feet.

Snowboard cores can be made of wood, composites or experimental hybrids. Wooden cores are usually more responsive and durable. Snowboard construction: Structural Layer Fibreglass layers that create the structural form of the board and dictate the flex and torsional characteristics of it. This means the top sheet wraps all the way over the top and down over the edges eliminating a separate sidewall.This gives the board a more even flex with less weight.

Aluminum Alloy: Portions of many bindings are made from aluminum, and the notion exists, "aluminum is more substantial than plastic. It will last longer, and weigh less".

Sidewall/sandwich laminate construction: This features layered materials; its edges are a separate sidewall. Laminated boards are durable and easy to repair.
