ť Christmas decorations: Weave ribbons around the base of a living Christmas tree What looks like the biggest present under this living Christmas tree is an easy-to-make cylindrical surround that masks the pot in which the tree grows.

It's wrapped in ribbons and sized to the height and width of the pot, which sits in a waterproof saucer. You can also scale the surround to fit a lower, smaller stand for a cut tree.

Order close to home if possible. The tree will have less distance to travel, and shipping charges may be lower. However, ordering from a distance may allow you to get a kind of tree you've never had before. Some sites let you order tree stands for an additional price, but generally your tree will be delivered without a stand.

Figure out how many strings of lights you'll need based on your measurements; strings come in lengths from 25 lights to 200 lights. For trees and bushes, figure on about 50 lights per foot of height, or double that number if you're using miniature lights.

To make a Tree Skirt buy 5 yards of fabric. For simplicity, try to get fabric that is 45 inches wide. This will give you a tree skirt just under 90 inches in diameter after hemming - big enough for just about any tree.

Cut a rectangle of poultry netting or mesh fencing slightly larger than the height and circumference of the Christmas tree container. (To make a smooth horizontal line for the top and bottom edges of the netting, fold the wire over on itself.)

Measure the length of each row, add at least a foot for each, and multiply this length by the number of rows.

For the surround shown above, we alternated bands of 3 1/2-inch gold and taupe ribbons, gathered and twisted in diagonal single rows, on poultry netting.
